Originally there were 18 people in the elevator, but two jumped out when they felt the elevator begin to sink. It slowly fell from the first floor to the basement with the outer door closed tightly and the inner door open. On September 3 another elevator, this one in the Lafollette complex trapped about seven students.
During each of these incidents, The Muncie Fire Department encourages people to call 911 in case of any emergency. That includes stuck elevators. “Call 911 every time, any time, all the time,” says Jim Clevenger of the Muncie Fire Department. Some students who were stuck in the elevator in Studebaker West say that they were specifically told not to call the police. Freshman Evan Hauser said, “They told us not to all the fire department and that they’d take care of it.”
