Around 400 prisoners are headed to the New Castle Correctional Facility. Prison officials said that nearly all of them are convicted sex offenders.
Of those being transferred, 48 of them already arrived at the facility. According to the Indiana Department of Corrections, most of the inmates are being transferred from the Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill, Ind., and the Plainfield Correctional Facility.
Prison Warden Jeff Wrigley said he expects all of the prisoners to arrive soon.
“They will be arriving intermittently until the end of the year,” Wrigley said.
The new inmates will be segregated from the rest of the population. They will be living in two separate housing units.
Wrigley said the inmates will be housed in a medium security area and not the minimum security housing.
He also added that
the sex offenders will not be providing community service throughout
Wrigley emphasized that when released, the new prisoners will not be set free into the New Castle community.
“The inmates will be released at the community of residence,” Wrigley said.
The prison will also be working with Liberty Incorporated to provide a mandatory sex offender program that is geared toward detouring repeat offenders.
