Famous trophy in Muncie

The Heisman Trophy is perhaps the most well-known award to American sports fans, and it was in Muncie throughout Monday.

The trophy has been on display since 9:00 a.m. Monday at Muncie's Nissan dealership. It also made an appearance at MCL Cafeteria during Ball State head football coach Stan Parrish's weekly luncheon.

New York City's Downtown Athletic Club awards the Heisman Trophy to college football's most outstanding player every year.

Ashley Smith is the office manager of Muncie Nissan. She was thrilled to have the trophy at her dealership.

"I think it's amazing to have it here," Smith said. "I mean, when you think this could be anywhere in the country, and we have it in Muncie, Indiana, at a small Nissan dealership."

Muncie Nissan has been allowing people to take pictures with the trophy throughout the day. The person with the best pose won't win the trophy, but he or she will win a prize.

Nissan is a sponsor of the Heisman Trophy. The car dealer has been sending the Heisman to dealerships across the country.

Smith said she thinks the success BSU football enjoyed last year and the publicity quarterback Nate Davis received has made more people in Muncie aware of the award.

This year's award presentation will take place on Dec. 12 in New York City.

Possible Heisman candidates

Overwhelmingly, the Heisman Trophy has gone to offensive skill position players-quarterbacks, running backs and receivers. It almost always goes to a player on a team either in contention for the national championship or at least a high-profile program.

This year's list of candidates seems to be made up of mostly quarterbacks.

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is looking to win the Heisman for the second time in three years. His Gators are gunning for a second straight national championship, and they've been ranked at the top of the polls the entire season.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was a finalist for last year's Heisman Trophy. McCoy has the Long Horns in position to compete for a national title.

Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen has brought his team back from several deficits to win games in the final moments. He nearly brought his Fighting Irish back from a 20-point hole in the fourth quarter against rival Southern California in early October.

Alabama running back Mark Ingram has emerged as a possible winner. The polls have consistently ranked the Crimson Tide in the nation's top 3 throughout the season.

One defensive player who has received some recognition is Nebraska defensive end Ndamukong Suh.
