Anderson students experience day in the life of a pilot

Even though the Anderson Preparatory Academy is in its first year of existence, the school is offering opportunities to students that most other kids their age may never experience.

This week, the cadets at the academy are getting flying lessons from members of the Civil Air Patrol, which is associated with the U.S Air Force.  Most often they work with Homeland Security and on search and rescue missions.

Monday started the three-day long adventure for the cadets at the academy.  For many students, this is their first time in a small plane, according to Commandant and academy co-founder Robert Guillaume.

“Many of these kids haven’t flown in a plane yet, it provides experience for them that may be useful to them later on in their life,” Guillaume said.

It’s not just enjoyable for the students though according to pilot Eric Templeton.

“It’s nice to see the looks on their faces…some of them are nervous, but most of them enjoy it.
Templeton said. “It reminds me of the first time I was flying in a plane.”

Wednesday will be the last day students will be flying with the Civil Air Patrol.
