Daniels, wife of Governor Mitch Daniels, visited Rose Hamilton Elementary
School in Centerville Friday. She was there to give a lesson on literacy - a
lesson she takes to different schools around the state of Indiana.
“It
is very important that they know that reading is something that is really going
to make them advance in the world, and that it is their ticket to success,” Daniels
said.
At
the end of the lesson, students were able to ask questions they prepared ahead
of time. Questions ranged from government to life for the Daniels family.
“It
was kind of fun for them to realize that they could actually talk to someone
that’s the wife of the governor for the state of Indiana,” Principal Lee
Steinbarger said.
According
to Steinbarger, Daniels’ visit to the school was the first appearance at any
school in
“We
were very excited about her coming to our classroom because of our love for
literacy in our classroom and her love for reading to children as well,” first
grade teacher Beth Schauss said.
The
school children gave a book called “Snow” to the first lady at the end of the
presentation as a gift. Inside the cover, each student signed his or her name
for her.
